 The Pharcyde was one of the most important rap groups to come out of South Los Angeles. Kanye West has singled out their debut as his favorite album of all time. But ten years later, after the music had influenced a generation, Pharcyde founder/producer J Swift was reduced to living as a homeless addict.
Filmmaker Shauna Garr, an old friend of J’s, discovered him cleaning a crack pipe on the streets of Hollywood… and was determined to get him straight. J rejected traditional rehab so the two collaborated on a reality TV pilot in which J would get sober. After shooting for four weeks, the project collapsed and J returned to the streets. But that’s not where the story ends. This groundbreaking documentary chronicles seven years in J Swift’s life as he struggles to rescue his artistic voice from the throes of addiction. Paul Mooney, Steve-O, Method Man, Jamie Kennedy, Noel “Detail” Fisher, and Akon weigh in on the subject. The film is a complex portrait of an artist chasing after 1 more hit. |
